Potatoes needed for Harvest Festival
In gardening class, the 8th graders have already begun preparation for the harvest soup, which is the 8th grade’s responsibility at our Harvest Festival. The festival will be from 11 to 1 p.m. on Saturday Sept. 24 and the 8th graders have signed up with Ms. Keeler for soup preparation and serving shifts that day so we will share that information with you as soon as I have it. In the meantime, if you are able to donate a 5-pound bag of Yukon gold potatoes for the soup that would be a huge help to us. Most of the other ingredients for the soup will come from the garden, but we do need plenty more potatoes. Please send these in anytime this week or by Monday Sept. 19 at the latest.
High School Field Trips and Open Houses
Over the course of the fall, the 8th graders will be doing a high school research project that also includes a career interest component. We will be visiting Fort Collins High School, where we’ll have a 45-minute tour with their peer counselors, on the morning of Oct. 21. We will be sending out a sign-up genius for chaperones for that trip soon. I’m also working on setting up a similar tour at Rocky Mountain High School, and we’ll hopefully be able to make that a bike field trip. Please remember to sign up with our verified volunteers system in case you wind up doing any chaperoning this year: http://www.mountainsage.org/volunteer.html
Also, if you have any interest in your 8th grader attending Polaris Expeditionary Learning School next year (as I know quite a few of you do), please mark your calendars for Thursday Nov. 10.
Joe Gawronski, the principal at Polaris, has set up an informal open house specifically for Mountain Sage students and parents from 5 to 6 p.m. on Nov. 10. He should be able to offer a lot of insight into the school, which also offers half-day shadows to prospective students.
Throughout our exploration of school possibilities we will be emphasizing being open to multiple paths since schools that are out of your neighborhood zone have limited openings.
Community Service Plans due Friday
A reminder that community service plans are due on Friday (Sept. 16). Please contact me if you have questions or concerns about this. Over the next week, or this weekend, the students should be calling organizations and devising a plan for when and where to get their hours fulfilled. Please let them do the calling; this work in setting something up and asking questions of adults at various organizations is a great skill for them.
This would also be a great week to start searching for a biography that inspires your 8th grader. They should have a book picked out by Sept. 25
Volunteer for any Friday 2:45-3:30
We are enjoying an extra games class on last period Fridays so we can work a little more movement and activity into our 8th grade schedule. Please send me an e-mail if you’d be able to come with us one Friday in the next month or so. This would allow us to move class to the “fairy woods” for a games session or two. We can play games like kick the can in the trees, and enjoy a little walk on the way.
