One thing that many of the students enjoyed doing at lunch was looking through books I brought in as extra resources. They find it funny in part to peruse these together, but it’s also really healthy for them to grow increasingly comfortable with learning about this basic part of their developing self. So I wanted to share with you these books, which are recommended reading for 7th graders in the Coming of Age Curriculum that became my main roadmap for the block. They are all public library books, which I’ve already returned to the library so you can check them out:
The What’s Happening to My Body Book for Girls by Lyda Madras
The What’s Happening to My Body Book for Boys by Lyda Madras
The Period Book, Karen and Jennifer Gravelle
It’s Perfectly Normal: Changing Bodies, Growing Up, Sex and Sexual Health by Robie Harris and Michael Emberley
Spring Break “homework”
The only suggested homework over break is to enjoy the outdoors, study play lines (especially for those students with larger parts), and find a good book to read. We’ll be reading independent novels when we come back from break so it would be great to go ahead and settle into one now.
Enjoy this time of welcoming spring, breathing out, and relaxing together!
Emma’s Class Report
On Monday we learned how the unborn baby grows in the uterus. Ms. Addington showed how this process works by showing us pictures like a picture story. We also had Explorations, math, and world language.
On Tuesday we had a substitute teacher, we went and saw Ms. Krieves’ 2nd grade class play, and we drew a baby in the womb. We also had art, and in math we corrected our quizzes. And we had choir.
On Wednesday we had gardening, math and learned about sexually transmitted disease and birth control. We had world language, handwork and practiced for the language arts parcc.
On Thursday we studied for our block and we practiced math parcc testing. We saw the 3rd grade class play. We also learned about human sexuality with Ms. Lark as a guest speaker.
On Friday we had our block test and had a speaker come in to talk about her pregnancy and birth. We also had world language, handwork, and games and now we are on spring break.
