This week we waded through some sensitive topics as we explored the experiences of puberty in both girls and boys and learned about the male and female reproductive systems. Some students are full of questions and comfortable with our discussions, while others feel slightly nauseated by the mere mention of sperm or menstruation. I’m feeling really good about the maturity with which they are handling the discussions, and I’m also trying to be sensitive to the fact that this is subject matter that everyone meets differently. It feels like the right time to be processing this together. Let me know if you have any concerns or questions.
On Tuesday of this week I will have a substitute while I observe the 8th grade teacher and her class at Shining Mountain Waldorf School in Boulder. I always find it helpful to take a day to begin gathering ideas for and envisioning the year to come.
Some students have developed a little premature spring fever and are forgetting their homework on occasion. Please be aware that most days except Friday they’ll have a couple problems of math homework, and that by this Wednesday they should have finished The Midwife’s Apprentice. Human Sexuality and Coming of Age main lesson book pages will be due on Friday, and students will receive a rubric for this on Monday. Remember that Monday is the day when Ms. Naughton, our guest poetry teacher from CSU, teaches first period, so students should be in their seats and ready to begin work with her promptly at 8:15.
Pencils and Pens
Please ask your 7th grader if they need a new supply of pens and/or pencils for their desk. I find that we take better care of writing utensils if they belong to us, but we can always use some spares for the classroom too, so if you’d like to also donate a pack of blue pens (for when our fountain pens go missing) or #2 pencils for the classroom, we could use them too.
Cullen’s Class Report, with help from assistant reporter, Nynaeve
On Monday, we talked about healthy communication and did conversation exercises.
On Tuesday, in math we did a Parrc pearson practice test for math. In main lesson we started talking about puberty and we looked at our baby pictures. We had choir. In art we finished our portraits.
On Wednesday we learned about the female reproductive system, and in handwork we worked on our puppet plays and also in gardening we went outside and measured the sit spot.
On Thursday we learned about the male reproductive system. We also had choir.
On Friday we reviewed the reproductive systems. We took our math quiz in math and had two games periods.
