11:00-11:30 - May Crowns!
Create a beautiful crown from treasures found in nature. Willow crowns are provided - please bring flowers (ideally found, not purchased to uphold our school views on sustainability). This will happen in the classroom this year. Parents are invited to come and help with this - there will be crowns for parents and younger siblings!
11:30 Meet Outside
Parents sit in designated parent area on the large tarp or on your blanket.
Child will sit with their designated class areas. The girls and boys will be invited forward separately for the choosing and crowning of the King and Queen of May. They will make a circle around the maypole for the chicken choosing. There will be a procession that is lead by the Queen and May Fairy after she is crowned and a procession lead by the King and May Fairy after he is crowned.
Teachers will sing a song to the community. And then we will begin the class' singing and dancing! This will last approximately 1/2 hour ending around 12:30.
The choosing of the King and Queen
One of our traditions is the choosing of the May Queen and May King. The girls in one circle and the boys in another sit down, ever so quietly, with their hands held out. The May Fairy flitters over and, ever so carefully, puts a tiny bit of grain in each child's hands. Next, our special guest chicken is placed in the middle of the circle. All the children watch, silently and expectantly, hoping the chicken will choose his or her grain to nibble. Whomever is chosen by the chicken, one from the boy's circle and one from the girl's, are crowned King and Queen. A memorable occasion indeed!
